Mile One of the AJC Peachtree Road Race

Mile One: Lenox Mall to the crossroads of Peachtree Street, Roswell Road, West Paces, and East Paces

You’ve gone to the expo, pinned your number on your most patriotic shirt, laced up the trainers, downed your bowl of Wheaties (no milk because “Milk was a bad choice”), hopped on MARTA, and have arrived at Lenox Mall. Peachtree is here, and you are ready.

The pre-race atmosphere at the AJC Peachtree Road Race is like no other. Thousands of people mingle outside of the city’s premier malls, excited to celebrate our nation’s birthday with 60,000 of their best friends at America’s greatest July 4th tradition. The buzz of excited runners and walkers only pauses for a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem. With a roar of approval, the gun pops at 7:30, and the first wave bolts down Peachtree Street.

The first mile of the Peachtree Road Race might be my favorite. Set the tone for the day by running under an American flag the size of a basketball court. Wind through Buckhead’s financial district and its towering, mirrored buildings that reflect the morning sky. Cross over Piedmont Road and pass E. Shadowlawn, home to Atlanta Track Club headquarters. End your mile by passing the Buckhead Theater, opened in 1931, and the Buckhead bars. The mile has some gradual rolling hills but is fairly flat, adding to the enjoyment.

For those that would rather watch than run:

Mile One is great for spectators, especially those interested in seeing the initial pack of elite athletes. The Terminus Building at the intersection of Peachtree and Piedmont offers parking and delicious breakfast and coffee options. Further down the road, you can wait for friends and family on a grassy knoll inside a small park at the intersection of Peachtree, Roswell, East Paces and West Paces. If you’re hoping to also watch the finish, Piedmont and Northside are both available routes down to Piedmont Park.

Check back in the coming weeks as we guide you through each mile of the AJC Peachtree Road Race!
